Scott Hulin

Mental Health Nurse, Sanctuary Care’s Trewartha Home

Mental health nurse Scott

Loyalty, Kindness, Respect

While Scott’s clinical expertise is exceptional, it’s the holistic nature of his care that truly shines. Scott sees beyond a person’s clinical needs, looking at who they are, their wellbeing and emotional needs. He devotes so much time to get to know his residents’ “life histories”. When he discovered one resident’s love of shanty music, Scott began singing with him regularly, creating moments of joy and connection that gave the resident a true sense of belonging.

Scott is an advocate for continuous learning. He recently led a study investigating potential links between certain psychiatric medications and falls. His findings were so insightful that they informed new training rolled out across Sanctuary’s homes in England and Scotland.

Scott is highly respected by his peers and he nurtures the team, supporting them with advice on clinical and psychological care. Scott takes the time to explain why decisions around a resident’s care have been made, with a calm demeanor that empowers his colleagues to ask questions. He is an incredible mentor, inspiring several of his care colleagues to begin their own journeys into nursing.

Scott is devoted to enriching the lives of the residents. For a former Royal Navy resident’s birthday, he arranged a visit from Naval personnel – a moving gesture that brought such joy to the resident and his family.

When a much-loved colleague was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour, she asked Scott to nurse her in the home, a request he honoured with care and love. Every day he sat with her, offering laughter, comfort and reassurance, as he does so beautifully with all his residents, even spending his breaks by her side.

Scott exemplifies what it means to be a nurse: clinically skilled, emotionally intelligent, and wholeheartedly committed to enriching lives – with professionalism, humility, and heart.
