Why care in Cornwall?

Our Cornish community was built on traditions of kindness, resilience and looking out for one another. These values have shaped who we are through the generations and from our villages to our coast.

Community

Today, Cornwall has a super-ageing population and a higher proportion of residents over the age of 65 than the national average for England and Wales. Forecasts show that the workforce will need to increase by 30-35% by 2035 to keep up with demand for social care services.

This demand is not just a statistic; it’s a call to action. Working in adult social care in Cornwall means helping people to stay safe in their communities whilst preserving their dignity and delivering person-centred care in the right place at the right time.

Career pathways

In Cornwall, the social care sector employs more people than the NHS so there is a role for everyone who wants to make a difference in their community. We have over 300 Care Quality Commission (CQC) registered care settings across Cornwall, so there are plenty of opportunities to start and develop a career in social care.

Career pathways could take you into management roles, social work, health services, quality assurance, commissioning, behavioural science, health tech…! It’s a journey that really could take you anywhere. Both the Director of Adult Social Services (DASS) in Cornwall and the CEO of Cornwall Council started their careers on the frontline delivering care.

Opportunities

Whichever job you choose, you will be fully supported and provided with all the training you need. Our local colleges and training providers offer great opportunities to gain qualifications and, usually, this will be paid for by your employer AND you’ll be earning while you learn.

If you’ve got the right values to work in social care in Cornwall, visit our jobs page or find an employer near you.
