About the role

✨ Support Worker Wanted – Come Join Our Lovely (and Slightly Mischievous) Team! ✨

We’re on the lookout for a Support Worker to join our small and friendly 9-bed Mental Health Unit… mainly because two of our long-standing team members have decided to retire.

Very selfish, if you ask us… but we suppose they’ve earned the right to enjoy their life after all these years! 😉

The good news? Our wonderful ladies have kindly agreed to hang around a little longer to help us find just the right person to join the team — so no pressure… but also, a little bit of pressure!

Our focus is simple:

👉 Helping people live their best possible life

👉 Supporting independence where possible

👉 Advocating, encouraging, and having a good laugh along the way

🎲 What Life Looks Like Here

No two days are the same, but you might find yourself:

Playing board games (competitive spirits welcome!)

Supporting outings and little adventures

Enjoying our beautiful gardens with residents

Sharing laughs and meaningful moments

And yes… spending time with our 3 on-site puppies 🐾 (arguably the real bosses)

We’re not just hiring a pair of hands — we want the right person. Someone who:

Has a good sense of humour (essential!)

Can build genuine connections with residents

Is compassionate, patient, and engaging

Understands the importance of dignity, independence, and advocacy

Wants to make a real difference every single day

If you’re looking for a role where you can laugh, connect, and genuinely impact people’s lives, this might just be your place.

And don’t worry… we promise our retirees will eventually leave. Probably. 😄

What we offer our staff

Training and development
Use of company vehicle

A typical day

No 2 days are the same and it depends of who you are assisting. Being flexible and able to quickly adapt is essential.

Key Responsibilities

This isn’t your typical “routine” care role — and that’s exactly why people love it here. Our residents are at a therapeutic level, meaning they can do a lot for themselves but still need the right support to live safely and happily. Some residents will require hands-on support with personal care, while the majority benefit more from gentle prompting, encouragement, and guidance to maintain their independence. The real heart of the role is all about engagement and connection — spending time chatting, laughing, and building meaningful relationships. Your day might involve supporting residents to take part in activities they enjoy, heading out on a shopping trip, playing a game of pool in the games room, or simply being present and making someone’s day that little bit better. You will also play an important role in advocating for our residents, ensuring their voice is heard and respected at all times. No two days are ever the same — some are calm, some are busy, and some are completely unpredictable — but every day is about making sure our residents have the best day possible.

About Penbownder House

We are an independent care home located just outside Launceston, set in a beautiful and peaceful rural setting.

Penbownder House is a charming 380-year-old manor house, surrounded by 10 acres of well-maintained gardens and grounds, all carefully looked after by our dedicated domestics, maintenance team, and groundsman.

Our service is made up of two units: a Dementia Unit and an Open Mental Health Unit, supporting residents with a wide range of needs. Our Dementia residents range in age from 65 to 103, while our Mental Health residents are typically aged between 55 and 75.

At the heart of everything we do is our simple but important motto:
“You work in our residents’ home, so be respectful and mindful of their wants and needs.”

Our care team works to a structured weekly rota, with schedules provided well in advance (usually a couple of months ahead) to support work-life balance. We also aim to be as flexible as possible — if you need something, it’s always worth asking.

You will be fully supported by our experienced Team Leaders, Seniors, and on-site Manager, ensuring you always have guidance and leadership available.

We provide in-house training, and all new carers complete a structured shadowing period ranging from 2 to 6 weeks, depending on experience and confidence, so you feel fully prepared and supported in your role.

We are looking for individuals who have:

A caring, enthusiastic, and inclusive approach to supporting others
The ability to work as part of a team and empower individuals to reach their full potential
Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships
